Teaching Poetry with Third Graders
Third graders are a blast!  Here's an exercise that works especially well with this age group, although it can be used with 4th and 5th graders, also.  The best way to introduce this exercise to your class is to read sample poems by other children.  You could start by asking the children to think about a place they like to go when they want to be alone -- whether it's to think or read or relax or escape from a bothersome brother or sister.  Next, put the following titles on the board for the class to think about:

MY SECRET PLACE, MY SPECIAL PLACE, MY HIDING PLACE, MY FAVORITE PLACE.

Next, offer the following model:
My ___________________ Place

My __________________ place is __________________________________.

I go there when _________________________________________________.

I see ____________________, I hear _______________________________.

It makes me feel ______________.  In my __________________ place I can

_____________________________________________________________

because ____________________________________________.
Now read some of the children's sample poems:

My Favorite Place

My favorite place is the garage.
I go there when I am bored.
I see lots of tools.
I hear a lot of bangs from the tools falling.
It makes me feel like I'm a real mechanic.
In my garage I can build lots of stuff
because I practice a lot.

My Favorite Place

My favorite place is in the corner by my couch.
I go there when I get made to gather my thoughts.
I see my dog.  I hear my Mom and Dad calling my name.
It makes me feel better
when I can gather my thoughts.
In my corner place
it makes me feel good
because I can get over being mad.
