I Hold in My Hands . . .
This is an exercise in adjectives -- lots of them!  Read the following poem to your students (take a deep breath first), then break out the dictionaries.

The Brain
I hold in my skull one supercolossal
unwashed, extra intelligent, reliable,
unstoppable, gold plated, argon-
filled, gas-powered, football-
shaped, orange-colored, 212 degree,
unchanged, logical,
perfect, licensed,
electronically,
fuel-injected,
piece of
my brain.
Don't
try
to
out-
think
me!
                    Lou Ernst, Grade 5

Next put a model on the board:

I hold in my hands

piece of myself.
If you look closely
you can see it.

Ask students to fill the middle of the poem with adjectives chosen gleefully and carefully from the dictionary.

You could also use variations.  You can do this by altering the poem model slightly.  For example:

I hold in my _________________________
                              head
                              heart
                              mind
                              hand
                              dreams, etc.
one _______________ of my _______________
if you _________________ you can ________________.

Here is another fun example:

In My Hand
In my hand I hold one glass-
textured, African painted, glossy covered, gold
plated, crystal tipped, circular, perfectionated,
blossom scented, feathery, zestful, zigodic, zetaed,
bondering, single glass bead.  If you peer
closely, you will see it.
